I become an ASL-English Interpreting major after having bounced around from Communications and Computer Science (unofficially). Here at Northeastern University, I have joined the NU Deaf Club as Director of Public Relations (1997-1999). In Spring 1997, I was lucky to do my first co-op at the Massachusetts Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, a fabulous experience. How I got into the ASL racket is an interesting story in itself. My friend is an R.A. (Resident Assistant) in a dorm and brought some of his residents to "Night at the Student Center" (activities like bungee racing and such) which was during Deaf Awareness Week. I wanted to hang out with him, so I went along. One of the main events was "Deaf Deaf World" an activity where you try to get around a "town" without speaking, only gesturing. After sitting through it, I was surprised to find that I hadn't participated. In retrospect, I thought it was weird that I didn't: I just followed my friend around and watch him do it (This leads to another interesting story). I was amazed by this language and wanted to do more. So, as soon as I could, I found out about the Deaf Club and ASL courses. (Before this, I had thought of taking ASL 1, but never thought I would do anything else.) It was 2 or 3 weeks into the quarter and I went to the ASL office, and like it was yesterday, I remember sitting on the floor amidst many papers with one of the ASL teachers scribbling back and forth different "introductory" information...why I wanted start...where the class was...'it might be full'...what's your name?... Soon it covered a handful of sheets and that's how we would do most communication for the next few months. Now I can hardly believe that I can carry conversations in ASL (especially with fellow students because they're just as new as I am). I then jumped into the class the next Monday (The class was at 8AM. Previously, I had vowed not to take another 8 AM class, so you can see how anxious I was to do it.). Some of my other interests include computers, movies, and
certain TV programs. I was a big Simpsons fan and used to
constantly watch television, but last quarter I lost most
interest in television, except for Mystery
Science Theater 3000, recently dropped by Comedy Central
and picked up by Sci-Fi Channel (and now...they've dropped it too. :-( ). Follow the above link for
info. I am MSTie #67867. Loved the movie! I've recently read a lot of Stephen King. I was a huge Quantum Leap fan (almost every ep on tape). I'm a hockey fan. I've been a Rangers fan since about 92-3. In Fall 1999, I switched majors to Linguistics.
