Palm FAQs
First before I start answering FAQs (and before you start
asking them), there are a few places you should know about
before you start asking questions. You will most likely find
the answers to your questions there. I am not trying to
duplicate or compete with Calvin's FAQ list (heck, his site
is my first link) but I just want to send people to some
good resources. Maybe Calvin will "buy me out." Who
knows?
Probably the most straightforward for questions site is
the PalmPilot FAQ
by Calvin O. Parker. This site's raison d'etre is to
answer questions about the PalmPilot hardware, software, and
Palm-related chats and other miscellany. It is not
officially from Palm, but everybody knows about it and goes
there.
At the PalmPilot FAQ site, you can also find information
about the weekly PalmPilot chats, Sundays
Another common question is whether or not there is
software for a certain purpose, like expense tracking or
travel tracking. PalmGear
HQ is a great repository for PalmPilot software.
PGHQ also has "Doc files" or data files that aren't
applications but information in Pilot readable format. There
is another site that specializes in this called MemoWare.
They also have J-File/HanDBase/MobileDB/etc. databases.
There is also a site called Palmtastik
that carries files for travelers, such as TealMeal
(restaurant selector) DB's or city guides.
Sometimes, however, a piece of software is not posted to
PGHQ. One way I have stumbled onto software is through the
PalmPilot
WebRing. Go to any major PalmPilot site and find the
WebRing buttons. Just keep hitting the buttons (Bookmark the
Random link and keep it handy.). You could stumble onto some
goodies that are not listed in PGHQ.
Another information source is the archive
of the major PalmPilot
mailing list run by Tracy Reed and hosted at
Ultraviolet.org. Chances are that your topic has come up and
this may help twofold because the posts to the list may
contain balanced product feature comparisons (something that
a software program's web page rarely has). This also helps
to keep a discussion from happening twice. After finding the
desired thread, perhaps a new angle may spark
discussion.
Some other sites of interest (sorry, no fancy copy):
Palm
OS Devices - what are the differences?
Palmstation -
Post an article about a news item, ro software, or web site.
Participate in a poll.
Palmac
- web site and e-mail discussion list for people who use
Palm and Macintosh together.
Slashdot - "News
for Nerds"...Intel, Linux, Star Wars, Pilot....
Are you having trouble with Graffiti?
Here
is a page full of symptoms, diagnoses, and cures for various
problems with PalmPilot/PalmIII screens.
So that's it for me... Now it's your turn. Ask
a question and I'll post it with my answer.
